Our 10-dimension testing methodology — fully transparent, independently replicable.
A score without a methodology is just an opinion. When we say a skate scores 8.7/10, we want you to know exactly what that means — what we measured, how we tested, and why each dimension matters. This transparency lets you decide whether our priorities match yours.
Every review on this site links back to this page. If a product scores well, you can see exactly why. If it scores poorly, the methodology holds us accountable — we can't just say "it's bad" without explaining which dimensions it failed on.
Every piece of hockey equipment is evaluated across these ten dimensions. Each dimension has a specific weight in the final score, reflecting its importance to the average player.
| # | Dimension | Weight | What We Measure | How We Test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Comfort & Fit | 15% | Initial comfort, break-in period, pressure points, fit consistency | Multiple testers with different foot/hand shapes. Minimum 10 ice sessions. Tracked break-in time in hours. |
| 2 | Protection | 15% | Impact absorption, coverage area, structural integrity after impacts | Real-game scenarios. Post-session inspection for bruising/pressure marks. Long-term tracking of protection degradation. |
| 3 | Durability | 15% | Material wear, stitching integrity, rust/corrosion, foam compression | Tracked over 3+ months of regular use. Photographed wear patterns. Compared against manufacturer claims. |
| 4 | Weight | 10% | Actual measured weight in grams (not manufacturer claims) | Digital scale, calibrated. Compared against similar products in the same category and price range. |
| 5 | Value for Money | 15% | Performance relative to price, comparison with similarly-priced alternatives | Price-to-performance ratio analysis. "Would we buy this with our own money at full retail price?" test. |
| 6 | Innovation | 5% | Unique features, new technologies, design originality | Comparison against previous model and competitors. Assessment of whether "innovation" is real or marketing. |
| 7 | Appearance | 5% | Design quality, color options, visual appeal | Subjective assessment from 3+ testers. Acknowledged as personal preference — low weight reflects this. |
| 8 | Adjustability | 5% | Customization options, fit adjustments, removable components | Tested all adjustment mechanisms. Assessed whether adjustments actually change performance or are gimmicks. |
| 9 | Breathability & Moisture | 5% | Airflow, moisture wicking, odor resistance, drying time | Post-session weight gain from sweat absorption. Drying time measured. Long-term odor assessment. |
| 10 | Overall Experience | 10% | Intangible factors — confidence, feel, "would we miss it if we switched?" | Holistic editor assessment after full testing period. The stuff you can't measure but definitely notice. |
Environment: All ice skates are tested on NHL-standard ice surfaces (indoor rinks, approximately -5°C / 23°F). Sticks are tested in both game and practice scenarios. Protective gear is tested in full-contact league games.
Duration: Minimum 10 ice sessions (approximately 10-15 hours of use) before a review is published. Long-term durability notes are added after 3+ months.
Testers: Our testing panel includes players at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, with narrow, medium, and wide foot shapes. This ensures our recommendations account for different skill levels and body types.
We do not accept payment for reviews. We do not accept free products in exchange for positive coverage. The majority of products we test are purchased at retail price with our own funds. Occasionally, manufacturers provide review samples — these are disclosed in the individual review and do not influence our scoring.
Affiliate commissions do not affect scores. We earn commissions on some products when readers purchase through our links. Our scoring methodology and review content are completely independent of these financial relationships. Read our full manifesto for more on our principles.
If you believe a score is inaccurate or outdated, please contact us with specific evidence. We review and update scores when new information warrants it.
